António da Rosa Furtado was born in Horta and emigrated to New Bedford, MA, in 1953. He arrived in Faial to visit his family on September 25, 1957, two days before the Capelinhos volcanic eruption, equipped with a color movie camera that, instead of capturing family scenes, turned into the instrument to register for posterity the eruption of the Capelinhos volcano. The footage was later used on the East Coast to raise awareness and funds for the families displaced by the volcano.
Furtado was also the producer of the widely acclaimed movies Açores: Ilhas de Sonho and Açores: Crise Sísmica ’80. For many years, and in partnership with Jaoquim Esteves, Furtado promoted the showing of many Portuguese movies and the performances of well-known Portuguese artists in California for the entertainment of the immigrant community.
Furtado is a well-known entrepreneur, respected businessman, film producer, philanthropist, and community benefactor. He currently lives in San José with wife, Gina, and they own Furtado Jewelers and Imports.
This video clip contains the original footage and narration by the producer.
